The countdown is on! Coast Guard Marathon weekend begins April 5, 2024 in designated Coast Guard City, Elizabeth City, North Carolina.
Whether you’re a seasoned runner or just looking for a fun way to support our Coast Guard community, the Coast Guard Marathon is one race you don’t want to miss. If you missed the in-person registration deadline you can still join us on race day as a spectator and participate virtually or in-person for the 5K! Let’s fill Elizabeth City’s streets with USCG pride.

Make a Weekend of it!
Gear up and get ready to run! We’re excited to welcome runners to Elizabeth City for this first-ever in-person road race sanctioned by the U.S. Coast Guard. Whether you choose to run the 5K, Half Marathon or Full Marathon, you’ll have plenty of sights to take in along the race course, but we invite you to make a weekend of it and explore even more! Enjoy our downtown restaurants and breweries or check out local shops, historic sights dating back to the 1700s. Here are a few ways to make the most of your Coast Guard Marathon weekend in Elizabeth City, N.C.
Dine & Drink
Get away from the routine of your everyday meals and choose from an array of local, independently-owned restaurants and eateries around Elizabeth City where no two meals are exactly alike. Taste & Toast your way around town and sip and savor all the flavors of Elizabeth City from breakfast to a nightcap!
Embrace Nature
Elizabeth City’s waterfront has an unbeatable view of the Pasquotank River perfect for a romantic evening picnic, family fishing, or just enjoying the fresh air. If you’re feeling adventurous, Sail River City offers a variety of sailing and rowing lessons or if you have a boat or kayak of your own, the Waterfront Park boat ramp and Coast Guard Park kayak launch are open to the public and easy to access.
Explore the Arts
Peruse the downtown streets to see how many hand-painted murals you can find and be sure to snag a selfie at the Coca-Cola Ghost Sign, Pailin’s Alley mural, Muddy Waters Coffeehouse mural and more. If you’re in town on March 4, head downtown from 4pm-7pm for live music, art and plenty of fun for our monthly First Friday ArtWalk. We invite you to explore the shops, experience local dining options, meander downtown and mingle with the locals!
Retail Therapy
Our Downtown District (conveniently located near the waterfront) is great for shopping; you can find anything you’re looking for within walking distance! There’s plenty of shopping fun everyone in our eclectic downtown district at the boutiques and specialty shops.
Learn the History
Take a trip over to our regional history museum, the Museum of the Albemarle, on Thursday, Friday or Saturday to learn all about what makes our region so special. If you prefer a walking tour, check out the Civil War Trail Markers, Elizabeth City Aviation Tour, or the Main Street Residential District Tour at VisitElizabethCity.com. Elizabeth City is also home to one of the only remaining airship hangars from the WWII era, located just a few minutes from Base Elizabeth City!
Port Discover offers programs where kids can learn about the science and environment of our region. The downtown and waterfront areas offer plenty of scenic beauty and fun at the parks for the whole family; head to Charles Creek Park, Waterfront Park or Mariners’ Wharf to enjoy a picnic, take in the scenery, or burn some energy and play between race weekend events.
